FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cohousing?
Cohousing is an intentional community of private homes clustered around shared space.  Under California law, Yulupa Co-housing is a condominium complex—with private home ownership by individuals—designed to foster connection and community among its members. The units, are arranged around a central courtyard, with common facilities including dining/gathering space, kitchen, laundry, and recreational areas. Yulupa Cohousing aims to be a supportive, diverse and intergenerational community that encourages participation by all members in the work of the community, as well as abundant opportunities for socializing.

Are there any openings at Yulupa Cohousing at this time?
Available Units are listed under Floor Plans & Available Units.

I would like to visit your community.  How do I arrange for a tour?
We have temporarily suspended regular tours of Yulupa Cohousing due to COVID-19. We look forward to resuming our tours, typically offered every first Sunday at 1:30 p.m. If you are visiting from out of town and wish to arrange a private tour, please email us.

What is the process for becoming a member/resident of Yulupa Cohousing?
It is very important to visit and check out Yulupa to see if our community would be a good fit for you. We do not choose you, but instead you need to decide if you want to choose us. First, come for a tour and then complete and submit an Interest Questionnaire. This will help you understand the benefits and responsibilities of membership and help us learn more about your needs and desires. Submitting a questionnaire is required for being placed on our Interested Persons List.

The third step is to attend a General Meeting to learn how we work together and manage community life and business. Your tour guide can give you upcoming meeting dates and times for the current year. Then, consider attending a community event (possibly via Zoom) to meet more people and determine if we are a good fit for you. If so, you then proceed with applying to rent or purchase a unit directly from the owner.

Legally, the residences are condominiums, which can be marketed and sold like conventional homes. Anyone renting a unit must have a written lease subject to the CC&Rs (Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions) governing documents and owners are responsible for compliance.
May I join in a Community Work Day?
Our once-a-month community work days are an excellent way to meet residents and get a feel for how we work together. Work days are held on the third Saturday of the month, from 9 a.m. to noon, and focus primarily on landscape maintenance. If you’d like to join an upcoming work day, please email us to schedule a visit.

May I stay in your Guest Room while I am in town?
While our guest room is reserved for members and their guests, if you are seriously interested in buying or renting a unit, please email  the Membership Committee  to make arrangements.
Do the units have private yards?
The four townhouses and one downstairs 3-bedroom unit have small private backyards. All other units have either a porch or a balcony and many are shared with the adjoining unit.

Are pets allowed?
We allow one pet per unit. Waivers to grandfather in additional pets, if they are already part of the family, can be requested and may be approved by the Board of Directors. Dogs must be on leash in the shared outdoor spaces at all times. Cats are currently allowed outdoors, but we encourage cat owners to have indoor cats, for the health of wild bird populations, and to keep them from using vegetable garden beds as litterboxes or spreading disease.
Do you have any rental openings and if so, how much do they cost?
Our units are predominantly owner occupied, but occasionally a rental opens up and is listed under *Floor Plans & Availability*. Sale and rental costs are determined by unit owners.
What is the legal status of Yulupa Cohousing?
Yulupa Cohousing is a California condominium governed by CC&R (Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions) documents. We have a board of directors who must comply with the CC&Rs, Bylaws, and the legal framework of our Home Owner’s Association (HOA).
Does YCH have handicapped accessible units?
Yes, we have two downstairs units that are handicapped accessible and we have designated parking spaces for people who have the appropriate parking permit.
